The High Court in Accra has sentenced a 32-year-old Nigerian man to 10 years in prison for attempting to smuggle drugs out of Ghana via Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
He was convicted after being arrested for trying to transport 90 thumb-sized pellets of cocaine, weighing a total of 1.54 kilograms.
In addition to the prison sentence, the man received a fine of ten thousand penalty units, equivalent to GH¢1,200,000.
Should he fail to pay this fine, he would face an additional three years in prison.
The court also mandated the destruction of the seized drugs, which will be overseen by all relevant parties, including the court registrar, state prosecutors, and the defense counsel.
The incident occurred on February 21, when Mr. Ezugwu was detained by officers from the Narcotic Control Commission (NACOC) at KIA during pre-boarding checks for a flight to Hanoi, Vietnam.
Mr. Ezugwu was charged with three narcotic-related offenses: unlawful possession, attempted exportation of narcotic drugs, and money laundering.
He appeared before the Criminal Court Division of the Accra High Court, where he pleaded guilty to all charges and was convicted accordingly.
