Police in Accra have arrested a 36-year-old Nigerian man, Emmanuel Okafor Chukwuma, in connection with a violent robbery attack on a Mobile Money vendor at Avenor that left the victim wounded and nearly cost her GHS 20,000.
The incident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on June 30, 2025, saw Chukwuma and an accomplice, both reportedly armed and riding an unregistered motorbike, storm the woman’s roadside kiosk under the cover of darkness.
During the attack, the robbers fired three gunshots, one of which struck the female vendor in the leg. They grabbed her handbag containing GHS 20,000 and attempted to flee, but their plan was thwarted when a bystander raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents.
In the confusion, the robbers abandoned their motorcycle and escaped on foot. Police later tracked Chukwuma down as he tried to flee Ghana. Investigations revealed that he had already booked travel arrangements to Nigeria in a bid to evade arrest.
A statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs at the Accra Regional Police Command, confirmed that GHS 9,000 of the stolen amount was recovered and has since been returned to the victim.
Chukwuma was arraigned before an Accra court and has been remanded into police custody pending further investigations. His next court appearance is set for July 30, 2025.
The Police Command has praised members of the public whose swift actions helped disrupt the robbery and urged continued public vigilance. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities by calling the police emergency lines 18555 or 191.
