Police in Ghana’s Volta Region have arrested 19 people, including seven Nigerian women, in a night operation targeting suspected commercial sex work in Akatsi.

The joint exercise, led by officers from Sogakope and Akatsi, was carried out around 19:30 GMT on Friday, municipal officials confirmed.

According to witnesses, the swoop prompted many young men in the township—locally referred to as “game boys”—to disperse from their usual hangouts as officers moved in.

Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive, Daniel Dagba, who also chairs the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), told the Ghana News Agency that the arrests were made at several locations across the town, including the Ahiatsi Star Pub, a popular nightlife spot.

The acting Sogakope Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Isaac Baah, also confirmed the operation and said all 19 suspects are currently in custody while police decide on the next line of action.

He added that his team is on heightened alert to maintain law and order in Akatsi and surrounding communities before, during and after the Christmas festivities.

Chief Supt Baah declined to give further operational details, but indicated that similar enforcement activities would continue as part of efforts to “ensure sanity” in the municipality.
