Three young men from Asempaneye in the Ashanti Region have been handed a combined 75-year prison sentence with hard labour for violently robbing a truck driver and his mate on the Kumasi-Techiman Highway.
The Offinso Circuit Court, presided over by Paul Oduro Esq., sentenced Nasiru Abdul-Malik (22), Solomon Kwaku Annor Clinton (23), and Hakeem Ibrahim (20) after they pleaded guilty to robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
Each was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for conspiracy to commit robbery and 15 years’ IHL for theft, with all sentences to run concurrently. This means that each will serve the highest sentence, which is 15 years in jail.
In the early hours of 23rd September 2025, a DAF trailer transporting fertiliser from Tema to Wa broke down near Asempaneye. While the driver sought repairs at a roadside vulcanising shop, the trio—armed with an axe, machete, and scissors—pounced on the driver and his mate.
They fled with:
A Samsung A24 Ultra smartphone (GH¢1,400)
Two Itel phones (GH¢400 & GH¢100)
A backpack and bag containing personal effects
Cash of GH¢140
The youth of Asempaneye quickly mobilised, apprehending all three culprits the same day. The stolen items were recovered, and during police interrogations, the men confessed to the crime.
In a statement, the Ashanti North Police Command praised the swift action of residents, describing their vigilance as “instrumental” in ensuring justice. The convicts have since been transferred to Kumasi Central Prisons to begin serving their terms.
“We commend the people of Asempaneye for their cooperation. The Police remain resolute in protecting lives and property and ensuring that offenders face the full rigours of the law,” the statement added.
