The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has officially handed over 17 gold bars, valued at $1.7 million, to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) in a ceremony held at the Ministry of the Interior in Accra.
The seized gold was intercepted by officers from NACOC’s Upper East Command at the Paga Border Post, as two Burkinabe nationals attempted to smuggle the bars out of Ghana. The suspects have since been charged with gold-related offences, including unauthorised transportation and dealing in gold.
At the handover event, Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for GoldBod’s mandate to manage and regulate Ghana’s gold resources, pledging continued backing for the institution’s work in ensuring responsible gold trading and national benefit.
GoldBod CEO, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, expressed appreciation to NACOC’s Director-General, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, for the effective collaboration and successful seizure. He called for ongoing inter-agency cooperation, noting that the fight against gold smuggling and illegal trade requires united efforts across national security institutions.
The brief but symbolic ceremony was attended by Chief Director of the Ministry, Mrs. Doreen Annan, NACOC leadership, and senior GoldBod officials, all of whom reiterated their commitment to ensuring Ghana’s gold resources are protected from exploitation and illicit export.
