A 21-year-old okada rider identified as Gilbert Awuni Alia, alias Starboy, has been arrested in connection with the tragic shooting of a queenmother during a naming ceremony at Gbawe Zero in Accra.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, June 19, 2025, claimed the life of 33-year-old Pearl Naa Dodoowa Whitaker, also known in private life as Naa Agyinafo I of Papase. She was shot at close range and died instantly.

Another woman, 38-year-old Priscilla Na Ayele, sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. She is currently receiving care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre and is reported to be in stable condition.

At a press briefing on Monday, July 7, the Accra Regional Police Command confirmed Starboy's arrest at Asokore in the Ashanti Region, where he had fled after the shooting. He was part of a group that recklessly fired weapons during the ceremony, according to the police.

The naming event was hosted by Ibrahim Ni Ayikwashi Solomon, alias Nii Ayi Solomon, who had initially reported the shooting but has since been arrested after admitting to authorizing the use of firearms at the gathering.

Authorities believe the chaos may have been fueled by a local drink, Sobo, suspected to have been laced with narcotics. During interrogation, Starboy confessed to firing a gun while under the influence of alcohol. He told police he discarded the weapon after the incident.

A second accomplice has also been arrested. Police have recovered a locally made firearm, spent shells, and traces of gunpowder as part of the investigation.

The police have strongly condemned the illegal use of firearms at public events and warned that all those involved will be prosecuted.
