A robbery at a jewellery shop in one of Accra’s most affluent areas has finally led to arrests more than five months after the attack, with two men now in police custody.

The Ghana Police Service said the suspects, Abubakar Mamoud and Mahmoud Abdul Aziz, also known as Justin Martin, were picked up on 24 February at Anyaa in the Greater Accra Region after intelligence-led operations by a specialised team from the CID Headquarters.

Investigators say the arrests are linked to a robbery carried out on 11 September 2025 near Nyaho Clinic in Dzorwulu. According to police, two men arrived on a motorbike, attacked a shop attendant, damaged part of the premises and escaped with jewellery.

The case had remained unresolved for months before detectives tracked the suspects down.

Police say searches conducted after the arrests uncovered a collection of items believed to have been used in the operation or connected to the disposal of the stolen goods. They include a hammer suspected to have been used to break the shop’s glass door, a black face mask, a toy pistol, a gold detector, a diamond detector, a gold weighing scale, gloves, a helmet, a backpack and two motorbikes.

The discovery of the toy pistol has added another layer to the case, suggesting the suspects may have relied on imitation force during the robbery.

According to police, both men admitted involvement during questioning and named a third person, identified only as Eddy of Oyarifa, as the alleged recipient of the stolen jewellery. Officers say efforts are ongoing to find and arrest him.

The two suspects were expected to appear in court on Thursday, 26 March.

Beyond the individual arrests, the case highlights the continuing challenge posed by motorbike-assisted robberies in Accra, where suspects can strike quickly and leave before help arrives. In this instance, police say the breakthrough came not through an immediate arrest at the scene, but through sustained intelligence work and follow-up investigations.
