The Ghana Police Service has successfully intercepted a planned armed robbery in Accra, following what officials describe as a precision intelligence operation led by the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID).

The operation, executed on Monday, July 15, 2025, was triggered by credible intelligence that five armed suspects had checked into a hotel in Labadi, allegedly plotting to rob a foreign national in the upscale Cantonments area.

According to a statement released on the Service’s official Facebook page, the suspects were being monitored as they moved toward their target in a Toyota Yaris. However, the plot took a violent turn when the suspects spotted the surveillance team and opened fire on the police.

In the ensuing shootout, one police officer sustained gunshot wounds to the legs and underarm. He was rushed to the hospital and is currently in stable condition, responding well to treatment.

The police returned fire, fatally wounding two of the suspects, who later died at the Police Hospital. The three other suspects managed to escape and are now the focus of an intensive manhunt across the capital.

A sweep of the suspects’ vehicle and belongings revealed a cache of items linked to the foiled crime. Among the recovered materials were:

Two pump-action shotguns

Live cartridges

Three mobile phones

Talismans believed to have been used for spiritual protection

Other paraphernalia suspected to be part of the planned robbery

The Ghana Police Service is urging the public to assist in locating the fugitives by reporting any suspicious activity or persons. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining law and order, emphasizing that such operations form part of broader efforts to ensure public safety, particularly in high-risk urban areas.
