A police statement said a Kuntanase District patrol team, while on routine checks, spotted a white Toyota Sienta (registration NR 289-24) parked suspiciously by the roadside near a bushy area.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched investigations after a cache of firearms and ammunition was discovered in an abandoned vehicle along the Aputuoagya–Bekwai Road.

A police statement said a Kuntanase District patrol team, while on routine checks, spotted a white Toyota Sienta (registration NR 289-24) parked suspiciously by the roadside near a bushy area. Two men standing by the vehicle, believed to have been smoking a substance suspected to be narcotics, fled upon seeing the police.

A search of the car uncovered one AK-47 assault rifle with serial number 29546, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines with 30 rounds each, four packets of ammunition containing 25 rounds each, and seven loose rounds. Police also retrieved a pair of Wellington boots, sandals, a Huawei smartphone, cowrie shells, and identity documents.

The vehicle has since been impounded at the Kuntanase Police Station, with all items secured as exhibits. Police say the discovery suggests plans to commit violent crime in the area.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has urged the public to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.

“We encourage anyone with relevant information to report to the nearest police station or call emergency numbers 191, 18555, or 112,” the statement said.
