Police officers stationed at the Tadzewu-Metsrikasa Barrier in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region have uncovered a significant cache of ammunition concealed on a passenger bus traveling from Accra to Benin.

The discovery was made around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2025, during a routine check on a Hyundai passenger vehicle with registration number GR 8246-Q.

Upon inspection, officers found 60 cartons of AAA cartridges—amounting to 15,000 rounds—and 72 cartons of BB cartridges, totaling 18,000 rounds. The ammunition was hidden beneath luggage and carefully wrapped in sacks in an apparent attempt to evade detection.

This was disclosed in an official statement from the Volta Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, signed by DSP Felix Danku and dated April 19, 2025.

The vehicle's driver, 45-year-old Abasou Fousseni, and his co-driver, 38-year-old Salisu Jalilu, were taken into custody for questioning. Both denied any knowledge of the ammunition, though preliminary investigations point to the co-driver as the individual responsible for loading the contraband.

Authorities have since released the driver on bail to continue the journey with passengers, while the co-driver remains in custody to assist with further inquiries. He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, April 22.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to fighting cross-border crimes, especially those posing risks to regional peace and security, and indicated that investigations are ongoing to trace the origin and destination of the intercepted ammunition.
