The case, which police say involves possible sexual abuse, homicide, and negligence, has been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The Ghana Police Service has launched an intensive investigation into the death of 16-year-old footballer, Ransford Owusu, a player with Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, following disturbing allegations that he was sexually assaulted by his coach prior to his death.

The case, which police say involves possible sexual abuse, homicide, and negligence, has been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the national headquarters due to its serious nature.

Police said the investigation was triggered by a formal complaint filed by the deceased’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, at the Amasaman Police Station.

Owusu reportedly died on 28 February 2025 after falling ill. According to his mother’s statement, he had earlier confided in her that his coach, Anyass Ibrahim, had sexually abused him.

The suspect was arrested on 4 November 2025 and taken into police custody for questioning. He has since been released on bail and ordered to report regularly to the CID Headquarters as investigations continue.

Police sources revealed that medical documents submitted by the victim’s mother indicate that the teenager had been treated for liver and kidney complications prior to his death at two facilities in the Ashanti Region — the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Kumasi.

However, the investigation encountered setbacks when the hospitals declined to release the official medical and autopsy reports requested by police.

In response, the Ghana Police Service obtained a court order compelling both institutions to provide the complete medical records to aid the inquiry into the cause of death and to determine any potential link to the alleged assault.

The Director-General of Public Affairs, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, confirmed in a statement dated 8 November 2025 that the CID’s Homicide Unit is now leading the probe.

Police have urged the public to remain calm as they pursue the case “with the utmost professionalism and sensitivity,” pledging that justice will be served once the full facts are established.
