Police say the deceased, a native of Berekum, was discovered lying face down with multiple gunshot wounds.

The Bono Regional Police Command has begun investigations into the killing of 87-year-old retired veterinary officer Alhaji Abdulai Toure at Sampa in the Jaman North District.

His body was found on Monday, June 1, 2026, at New Japan, a suburb of Sampa, near a public cemetery.

Police say the deceased, a native of Berekum, was discovered lying face down with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was wearing blue-and-white striped lace clothing and a wristwatch, but had no footwear on.

A statement signed by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said officers moved to the scene after receiving information about the body.

Investigators retrieved five spent AAA cartridge casings and three spent BBB cartridge casings from the area.

The body has since been deposited at the Sampa Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

According to preliminary police findings, Alhaji Toure had earlier reported that unknown persons had set fire to his house in Sampa and his Opel Kadett vehicle.

He later boarded a passenger bus with registration number AS 9859-14 from the Sampa lorry station to Berekum.

Police said the driver stopped at a nearby vulcaniser to inflate a tyre after the bus departed.

While the tyre was being inflated, four young men, identified only as Abode, Mepawokyew, Alaska and Baala, allegedly entered the vehicle.

The suspects reportedly struggled with Alhaji Toure, forced him out of the bus and pushed him into a waiting tricycle, locally known as “pragya”.

They then allegedly drove towards the cemetery area on the Kokoa road.

The deceased was later found dead.

A 45-year-old farmer, Siaka Yahaya, has identified the body as that of his stepfather.

Police say efforts are underway to trace and arrest the suspects.

The Command has appealed to the public to provide any useful information that could assist investigations.
