The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into an alleged attack involving a group of approximately 15 individuals who reportedly stormed and vandalized the office and residence of Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communication and Digitalization.
In a statement issued on December 9, 2024, the police confirmed that a Crime Scene Management team had visited the premises as part of the ongoing inquiry.
“A targeted intelligence-led operation is underway to apprehend the suspects and bring them to justice,” the statement read. "The Police leadership has also reached out to Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, and security measures around her office and residence have been reinforced to ensure her safety."
The incident occurred on Monday, December 9, at approximately 1:17 PM. Reports indicate that unidentified individuals broke into Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s office, stealing several items and causing extensive damage. Stolen items include an undisclosed sum of money, a branded Nissan Hardbody vehicle, a television, a printer, two stabilizers, mobile phones, food supplies, and three new motorbikes. The attackers also damaged CCTV cameras, barbed wire, and the office door during the break-in.
While authorities have yet to confirm a connection between the incident and unrest following Ghana’s 2024 general elections, tensions remain high in some areas. For instance, in Damongo, angry youth set fire to the Electoral Commission office to protest delays in declaring election results.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, a leading figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lost her parliamentary seat for the Ablekuma West Constituency in the elections. Rev. Kweku Addo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious, securing 31,866 votes against Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s 26,575 votes.
The authorities have appealed for calm, urging the public to avoid unlawful acts and support efforts to ensure a peaceful transition. The police have heightened security operations to maintain public order and safeguard citizens.
