Security has been tightened in Akwatia as the Eastern South Regional Police Command ramps up operations ahead of the upcoming by-election. Over the weekend, police arrested ten suspects and confiscated nine firearms in a series of snap checks and intelligence-led raids.
On August 22, officers stationed near St. Dominic Hospital intercepted a vehicle driven by Bernard Kumi Ofosu. A search revealed a Tulpar double-barrel pump-action gun, four live AAA cartridges, and two blanks. Though Ofosu presented a licence, he remains in custody while the firearm is verified.
That same day at the Akwatia Y-Junction, police arrested Joshua Amenuku with 15 live cartridges. A follow-up search of his residence uncovered another ADLER Tulpar pump-action gun and five additional cartridges.
Later, at the Boadua Livingstone checkpoint, officers apprehended Enoch Asiedu and Lu Youyan, a Chinese national, after finding four live cartridges in their Toyota Hilux. Investigations suggest the ammunition belonged to their employer, identified only as Mohammed, who is now wanted by police.
On August 23, another suspect, Pieterson Joseph, was arrested at Boadua Livingstone Junction with an ADLER Tulpar pump-action gun and 46 cartridges in his vehicle, which he admitted owning.
Later that evening, a Toyota Tundra pickup (registration WR 5535-13) was stopped at Staff Village, Boadua. Inside were three pump-action guns — a Pardus, a Hulglu Atroe, and an unidentified brand. Stephen Nkansah, who claimed two belonged to him and the third to his chief, was detained.
According to the Command, the crackdown is part of a wider security strategy to prevent electoral violence and clamp down on unlawful firearms. Authorities say similar checks will continue to ensure the Akwatia by-election is peaceful before, during, and after the polls.
