The officer, identified as General Sergeant Mathew Aboase, is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of his service pistol during an altercation with commercial drivers.

A police officer stationed at the Madina Police Station has been arrested following a shooting incident at Ritz Junction in Accra that left two persons injured, one of whom required further medical treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The officer, identified as General Sergeant Mathew Aboase, is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of his service pistol during an altercation with commercial drivers.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 11, 2026, following a disagreement between the officer and members of the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union.

Preliminary police investigations suggest that the confrontation became heated when Sergeant Aboase allegedly drew his service pistol and threatened the drivers.

The drivers reportedly attempted to take the firearm from him, resulting in a struggle during which the weapon allegedly discharged unintentionally.

Two persons who were nearby, identified as Doe Asinyo and Gifty Nyimahen, 34, were struck by bullets during the incident.

Both victims were immediately transported to the Madina Pentecost Hospital for emergency medical attention.

Asinyo, who sustained a gunshot wound to his left thigh, received treatment and was subsequently discharged from the hospital.

Nyimahen, however, suffered a gunshot wound to her abdomen and was initially admitted to the facility before being transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical management.

Following the incident, the Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command commenced investigations to establish the events leading to the shooting and determine the circumstances under which the officer's firearm was discharged.

Sergeant Aboase was subsequently taken into police custody to assist with the ongoing investigations.

The Police have also retrieved and retained his service pistol as an exhibit for examination as part of the investigative process.

Investigations remain ongoing, with the Police yet to announce any formal charges against the officer.
