Kelvin Ofori Sakyi was found guilty of diverting GH¢75,895.00 from his employer’s sales revenue to fund his sports betting activities.

A 24-year-old sales agent at the Mile 8 branch of Obrempong Cold Store in Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality has been sentenced to seven years of hard labor for misappropriating company funds.

Kelvin Ofori Sakyi was found guilty of diverting GH¢75,895.00 from his employer’s sales revenue to fund his sports betting activities. The Tarkwa Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu, convicted him after he pleaded guilty to the offense.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joyce Odame, the case was brought forward by Priscilla Aidoo, the branch manager of Obrempong Cold Store, who noticed recurring shortages in daily sales accounts. Whenever there was a deficit, Sakyi claimed that customers had purchased goods on credit.

Suspicious of the discrepancies, Aidoo reported the matter to the authorities, leading to Sakyi’s arrest. Investigations revealed that he had been using the missing funds to place bets on football games. A review of his mobile money transaction records from MTN showed that between October and November 2024, he spent a total of GH¢75,173.00 on gambling. During interrogation, he admitted to the offense.

Following his guilty plea, the court sentenced him accordingly, serving as a cautionary tale on financial mismanagement and gambling addiction.
