A 28-year-old salesgirl, Sumaiya Amidu, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by an Accra Circuit Court after being found guilty of unlawful possession of narcotic drugs.

Presiding Judge Isaac Addo also imposed a GH¢120,000 fine on the convict. Should she fail to pay the amount, she will serve an additional three years behind bars.

Amidu’s arrest occurred on March 15, 2022, at Abbosey Okai Sabon Zongo, following an intelligence-led operation by officers of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit at the CID Headquarters.

According to ASP Seth Frimpong, Amidu was apprehended at a cosmetic shop. During a body search, officers discovered 165 gold foil wraps of a substance later confirmed to be cocaine, weighing 7.1940 grammes, hidden in her underwear.

In her caution statement, Amidu admitted the drugs were found on her, but claimed she was only holding them for someone identified as Dauda. However, she failed to provide further information to aid police in tracking him down.

Forensic testing verified the substance as cocaine, resulting in her prosecution and conviction.

The case underscores ongoing efforts by Ghanaian authorities to crack down on drug trafficking and enforce narcotics laws rigorously.
