A joint security operation in Accra has led to the arrest of nine people suspected of involvement in cybercrime, with 44 others described as victims of an alleged criminal network.
The sweep, carried out at multiple sites including East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija and Tuba, involved the Cyber Security Authority, National Security, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the police SWAT unit.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, said intelligence suggested some young men were being lured, exploited and coerced by alleged ringleaders into cybercrime.
Officials said the 44 individuals were found inside apartments, operating laptop computers. Searches at the locations also led to the seizure of 62 laptops, 52 mobile phones and two pump-action guns.
In total, the statement said 53 Nigerians were picked up during the operation and later handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigations.
The minister urged foreign nationals travelling to Ghana to verify claims independently, warning that some people are misled into entering situations linked to criminal activity.
