Sex extortion of 19-year-old SHS graduate earns plumber 12 years imprisonment

A 26-year-old plumber and hairstylist has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by an Accra High Court for sexual extortion.

Philip Spain Narh lured a 19-year-old recent high school graduate under the pretense of assisting her in becoming a web designer. He then coerced her into engaging in both vaginal and anal intercourse.

Unbeknownst to the victim, Narh secretly recorded their encounters and later uploaded the explicit footage online with the intent of blackmailing her.

He faced multiple charges, including sexual extortion, unauthorized distribution of intimate images, circulation of obscene material, and unlawful possession of narcotic substances.

Despite pleading not guilty, Narh was convicted after a full trial.

Case Details

According to the prosecution, the complainant (name withheld) is a 19-year-old senior high school graduate who lives with her parents in Kpone. The accused, Philip Spain Narh, also known as Sharon Stuttgart Woods, is a 26-year-old plumber and hairstylist residing with his father in Bawaleshie near Dodowa.

In late 2020, the complainant was introduced to the convict by a girl named Delphine, whom she met via Telegram, a social media platform. Narh created the impression that he was a female German-American named Sharon Stuttgart Woods, who was involved in financial services and had come to Ghana for business.

He further portrayed himself as a philanthropist with a passion for helping Black girls achieve their dreams and promised to assist the complainant in traveling abroad to further her education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The complainant expressed her interest in IT, stating her ambition to become a web developer with a long-term goal of working in artificial intelligence.

In December 2020, Narh, still pretending to be "Sharon Stuttgart Woods," informed the complainant that "she" had arrived in Ghana and arranged to meet her at a hotel in Dodowa to get acquainted.

On December 8, 2020, while the complainant was on her way to the meeting, Narh sent a message claiming that "she" had been summoned for an urgent meeting and instructed the complainant to wait at "her" driver’s brother’s house in Bawaleshie.

Unbeknownst to the complainant, the supposed driver’s brother was actually Narh himself. When she arrived at the location, Narh sent another message, coercing her into having sex with the supposed driver, claiming that it was a "test of loyalty" required for her admission to MIT. He then recorded the encounter.

Distressed by the situation and traumatized by the loss of her virginity, the complainant severed ties with Narh and deleted her Telegram account to avoid his further demands.

Escalation of Blackmail

However, Narh, determined to satisfy his insatiable desires, reached out to the complainant again under a new alias, "Valquez Rodeo De Mel." He claimed that he had been paid to leak her sex video but wanted to help her instead because he knew her and her family.

He then advised her to meet with "Sharon Stuttgart Woods" to settle the matter. Shortly after, he began blackmailing her, demanding anal and oral sex twice a month, threatening to leak the explicit video on YouTube, WhatsApp, and Telegram if she refused.

On January 5, 2021, Narh published the complainant’s nude photos and sex video on a Telegram channel known as "ADULT HOUSE," a pornographic group, and sent her the link to watch it. Distraught and suicidal, she confided in her best friend, who advised her to comply with Narh’s demands to prevent further exposure.

On January 12, 2021, the complainant went to Narh to plead with him to convince "Sharon Stuttgart Woods" to delete the explicit content. Instead, Narh became violent, forcibly had oral and vaginal sex with her, recorded the assault, and continued to blackmail her.

Arrest and Investigation

Overwhelmed by persistent suicidal thoughts, the complainant finally opened up to her coding tutor, who noticed her distress and encouraged her to report the matter to the police.

Narh was subsequently arrested. A search of his room led to the discovery of two mobile phones containing the complainant’s nude photos and sex videos. Additionally, law enforcement retrieved a quantity of seeds, dried powdery substances, and liquid substances suspected to be narcotics.

The suspected narcotic substances were sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory for testing. On June 30, 2021, forensic analysis confirmed that the powdery substances weighed 95.13 grams, the seeds weighed 1.10 grams, and another substance contained 73.37 grams of suspected narcotics. All tested positive for cannabis sativa, a classified narcotic drug.

With this overwhelming evidence, Narh was found guilty and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
