A 23-year-old small-scale miner, Ibrahim Bansie, has been fined GH¢2,400 by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for possessing narcotic drugs without authorization.

Bansie pleaded guilty to the charge, and in the event of non-payment, he will serve a 10-month prison sentence.

During the hearing, Chief Superintendent of Police Alex Odonkor informed the court, presided over by Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu, that Bansie was employed at Akoon Community Mines but resided near the Tarkwa Railway station.

According to the prosecution, the case came to light on November 8, 2023, at approximately 8:10 AM. A police officer, who was on foot patrol at the Tarkwa Railway station, entered a drinking bar and found Bansie sitting alone in a cubicle.

Upon approaching him, the officer observed that Bansie was holding a polythene bag and asked about its contents. When the bag was inspected, it was found to contain several wraps of dried leaves, black substances, and sachets of Tramadol.

Bansie was immediately taken into custody and transported to the Railway Police Station, along with the seized items. During interrogation, he claimed that the polythene bag had been given to him by an individual named Mistica but was unable to assist the police in locating the person.

The confiscated substances were sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for testing. The forensic analysis confirmed that the dried leaves contained active cannabis ingredients, while the green capsules tested positive for Tramadol.

Following investigations, Bansie was formally charged and convicted of the offence.
