A tragic case has emerged in Winneba where a three-year-old girl is receiving critical treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital after her stepmother allegedly poured hot water on her private parts as discipline for bedwetting.

The child’s mother explained that the girl had travelled from Swedru to stay with her father during the vacation but returned with visible injuries. She recounted:

“When I went to pick her up, I realised she couldn’t walk properly. When I examined her, I saw the burns. She told me her stepmother poured hot water on her for wetting her bed.”

Medical staff at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital have confirmed the severity of the injuries, stressing that the young girl will require complex treatment procedures.

In response, child protection organisation Challenging Heights has stepped in to support the victim’s family with medical care.

Its Mother and Child Rescue Unit is also demanding accountability for the act.

In a statement, the NGO urged stronger institutional safeguards, calling on government to empower the Department of Social Welfare, the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service to provide better protection for children.
