The suspect, known to residents only as “Mugu,” is said to have attacked the driver of a Daewoo Matiz taxi with registration number GS 8598-17 on Saturday, June 13.

A suspected armed robber has died after allegedly snatching a taxi at gunpoint near the La Girls’ School area in Accra.

The suspect, known to residents only as “Mugu,” is said to have attacked the driver of a Daewoo Matiz taxi with registration number GS 8598-17 on Saturday, June 13.

Witnesses say the confrontation turned violent when the suspect allegedly fired a shot before taking control of the vehicle.

The gunshot reportedly caused panic in the area, with residents and passers-by running for safety.

Some witnesses said people were afraid to intervene because the suspect appeared to be armed.

He then drove off in the taxi.

His escape, however, did not last long.

Residents said the stolen vehicle later crashed around the same La Girls’ School area.

The circumstances of the crash remain unclear.

The suspect was later found with a gunshot wound.

It is not yet known whether he sustained the wound before the crash, during the alleged robbery, or after the vehicle had crashed.

He was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.

Police officers who arrived at the scene conveyed the body to the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and further examination.

The taxi driver was said to have been attended to after the attack, but his condition was not immediately known.

The incident has left residents unsettled, with many expressing concern about the use of firearms in a busy residential area.

Police are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Investigations are expected to establish how the suspect died, the source of the gunshot wound, and the full circumstances surrounding the alleged taxi hijacking.

The case has also renewed concerns about violent attacks on commercial drivers in parts of Accra.
