A man suspected of stealing a motorbike has died following a brutal mob assault at Awutu Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
According to reports, the suspect and an accomplice allegedly hired an Okada rider from Esikaso in the Eastern Region under the guise of traveling to Awutu Bawjiase. Upon reaching the outskirts of the town, the suspects reportedly attacked the rider with a stick and fled with the motorbike.
The injured rider, however, managed to call for help from another Okada rider, prompting a chase.
Speaking to Adom News, the Assembly Member for the Bawjiase-Mankesim Electoral Area, Isaac Amoaquandoh, said the suspects were seen speeding along the Bawjiase-Okwampa road. One of the fleeing men was eventually caught by a group of Okada riders, while the other escaped.
The situation quickly turned violent. According to the Assembly Member, the angry mob severely beat the captured suspect and mutilated him by cutting off his testicles.
He was later rescued by officers from the Awutu Bawjiase District Police Command and rushed to the Awutu Bawjiase Polyclinic, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to the extent of his injuries.
The police have confirmed the incident and say they have opened investigations into both the alleged motorbike theft and the mob lynching, which has raised serious concerns about rising incidents of instant justice in the area.
Authorities are urging the public to allow the law to take its course and avoid taking justice into their own hands.
