A 19-year-old unemployed man has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour after admitting that he broke into a nurse’s room and stole her iPhone XR and cash.
Shadrack Cobbinah was convicted by the Tarkwa District Magistrate Court One after pleading guilty to unlawful entry and stealing.
The court, presided over by Bernice Mensimah Ackon, sentenced him on his own plea.
The complainant, Bernice Xornam Beble, is a nurse who lives at Nkamponase.
Police said she woke up in the early hours of May 16, 2026, and discovered that her room had been broken into.
Her iPhone XR, valued at GH¢2,500, and GH¢5,700 in cash were missing.
Police Sergeant Adwoa Yeboah, prosecuting, told the court that Cobbinah was arrested later the same day after he was seen trying to sell the stolen phone.
He was handed over to the police.
Officers recovered GH¢3,000 from him during investigations.
The prosecution said Cobbinah admitted the offence during interrogation.
He also named one Michell, who is currently at large, as his accomplice.
Cobbinah, however, claimed he stole only the iPhone XR and GH¢4,000.
He denied taking the full GH¢5,700 reported missing by the complainant.
The court convicted him on his plea and sentenced him to five years in prison with hard labour.
