Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has formally denied multiple sexual offence allegations during his appearance at Southwark Crown Court.

The Ghanaian midfielder, now with Villarreal in Spain, entered not guilty pleas to five counts of rape and one charge of sexual assault. The alleged incidents are said to have occurred between 2021 and 2022, a period when he was still active in the English Premier League.

The 32-year-old was charged only days after his contract with Arsenal ended in June. Following Tuesday’s hearing, he was granted bail pending trial, which has been scheduled for 2 November next year.

During the brief proceedings, Partey confirmed his identity before responding to each of the charges with a plea of not guilty.

Under his bail conditions, Partey must not make contact with the complainants and is required to give 24 hours’ notice to police before any international travel. However, these restrictions do not affect his ability to continue playing professional football.

The midfielder was already in England this week as Villarreal faced Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League. He came off the bench during the match, which ended in a 1–0 defeat for the Spanish side.
