Police in Accra have arrested three men for their alleged roles in the possession and fabrication of locally made pistols at Shiashie, a suburb of the capital.
The suspects are 24-year-old dispatch rider Patrick Gyimah of Bawaleshie, 27-year-old welder Emmanuel Osei Yeboah of Adenta Commando, and 29-year-old security guard Charles Somuah of Ogbojo.
According to a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, a police patrol team intercepted Gyimah on August 7, 2025, in a secluded spot under suspicious circumstances.
A search revealed a locally manufactured pistol in his pocket. Gyimah allegedly confessed that he bought the weapon for GH¢2,000 from Yeboah and Somuah, paying GH¢800 upfront with the balance due once documentation was provided.
The following day, Gyimah led investigators to the two accomplices, who were arrested at their homes. A search of Yeboah’s residence uncovered two more locally manufactured pistols, a toy pistol, a 12-bore cartridge, and a jackknife. Yeboah is said to have admitted to crafting the pistols and selling one to Gyimah.
The trio have been charged with manufacturing firearms without authority, unlawful possession of firearms, and abetment—all offences under the Arms and Ammunition Act, 1972 (NRCD 9). They pleaded not guilty when arraigned and were remanded to reappear in court on August 22, 2025.
The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against the illegal manufacture or possession of firearms, warning that such crimes carry severe penalties. It further appealed to citizens to report suspicious activities to help protect public safety.
