Police in the Wa West District have arrested three men after officers on routine patrol spotted a group openly carrying guns and ammunition at Goziri, near Vieri.
The Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, said the arrests were made on Monday, 3 February 2026. The suspects are Yahaya Samad (27), Adams Alhassan (37) and Yiritang Boosi (35).
Police said the patrol team saw about five men, each holding a single-barrel gun and a cutlass, which officers considered a threat to public safety. When the group noticed the police vehicle, they reportedly tried to run, but officers chased them and arrested three.
A search at the scene led to the recovery of three single-barrel guns, three cutlasses and 23 cartridges.
Police said the suspects later admitted they had no licences for the firearms or ammunition.
They have been remanded by the Wa Magistrate Court, presided over by Mr Simon Kofi Bediako, and are expected to return to court on 18 February 2026. Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest the other suspects who escaped.
The Regional Command praised the patrol team and warned the public—especially anyone holding firearms without proper authorisation—to regularise their documentation or face police action.
