Authorities have apprehended three individuals believed to be linked to the recent spate of attacks on mobile money (MoMo) vendors in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
The arrests were confirmed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who revealed that one suspect was picked up in Bawku, while the remaining two were arrested in Accra.
Dr. Amoakohene praised the collaborative efforts of the National Security and the Ghana Police Service for swiftly acting on intelligence, though he refrained from disclosing further details about the suspects.
The arrests follow a wave of deadly robberies that claimed the lives of three MoMo vendors in Kumasi over the past two months. These incidents have heightened tension and fear among residents and business operators in the region.
In response, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (RECSEC) has implemented several security interventions. These include increasing police presence across key areas and organizing safety training for mobile money vendors to enhance their protection.
Additionally, RECSEC has launched an operation targeting unregistered motorbikes, which are often linked to criminal activities in the area.
Two of the recent MoMo vendor killings reportedly involved the use of firearms. Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the need to address the circulation of illegal weapons and ammunition as part of a broader strategy to curb violent crimes in the region.
