The suspects are Eugene Oppong, 28, Paul Kumash, 30, and Amos Beyuo, 25.

Three people have been arrested in the Central Region after police uncovered an illegal mining operation close to a Ghana Water Limited pipeline at Efutu near Cape Coast.

The suspects are Eugene Oppong, 28, Paul Kumash, 30, and Amos Beyuo, 25.

They were picked up on Monday, June 8, during a special police operation carried out after a complaint from Ghana Water Limited.

According to the Central Regional Police Command, the illegal mining activity was taking place along the main pipeline of the water company.

Police say several other miners fled when officers arrived at the site.

They left behind mining tools and other equipment.

The items retrieved included 19 water pumping machines with water holes, four washing carpets, seven cutlasses and a wheelbarrow.

The command said equipment that could not be removed from the site was immobilised and set ablaze.

The seized items have been retained as exhibits.

Police say the three suspects are in custody and assisting investigations.
