An Amasaman Circuit Court has granted bail to three individuals accused of stealing a handbag containing a mobile phone, cash, and other personal belongings.
Each of the suspects was granted bail set at GH¢50,000, with the requirement of two sureties.
The court further ruled that the sureties must provide titled documents as proof of ownership and deposit their valid national identification cards with the Court’s Registry.
The accused—Richard Lamptey, Michael Tetteh, and Bright Boamah—who work as commercial motorbike riders, commonly known as "Okada" operators, have denied conspiring to rob Madam Emelia Tettey. They are expected to reappear in court on April 2, 2025.
Incident Details
Presenting the case, Police Chief Inspector Benjamin Arthur stated that the complainant, Madam Tettey, is a trader residing in Sampaman, while the accused reside in different parts of Dome Sampaman, Addeyman, and Kwashiekuma.
According to the prosecution, on October 23, 2024, around 4:00 AM, Madam Tettey was waiting for transportation at Dome Sampaman to travel to the Adjen Kotoku Onion Market. While she stood with two others, three men arrived on an unregistered motorbike, wielding a machete. They aggressively ordered her to hand over her belongings or face harm.
Fearing for her life, she tossed her handbag away. However, the suspects managed to seize it before escaping. The stolen bag reportedly contained GH¢9,250 in cash, an iPhone 12 Pro valued at GH¢7,000, a Ghana Card, a Voter ID card, an NHIS card, two ATM cards, and a phone charger.
Following intelligence-led investigations, law enforcement officers apprehended the suspects. During police questioning, Tetteh reportedly confessed to planning and executing the robbery with Lamptey and Boamah.
The trio was subsequently arraigned before the court.
