The Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to hairdresser Yayra Abiwu, popularly known as AY, who is standing trial for threatening President John Mahama and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, in a TikTok live stream.
Abiwu, who faces charges of abetment of crime, threat of death, and making electronic communications containing death threats, was absent from Wednesday’s hearing after collapsing and being admitted to the Police Hospital. She has pleaded not guilty.
The court granted her bail at GH¢50,000 with three sureties—two of whom must be gainfully employed. She must also deposit her passport with the court and report to the police every Monday. Her lawyer, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, argued that she posed no flight risk, stressing that bail was not meant to serve as punishment.
Meanwhile, her alleged accomplice, Prince Ofori, alias Fante Comedy, appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to charges of offensive conduct and permitting his TikTok platform to be used for offensive communication. His bail was set at GH¢100,000 with three sureties, along with similar reporting and passport conditions.
Prosecutor ASP Emmanuel Haligah opposed bail for Abiwu, pointing to video evidence in which she allegedly threatened to “kill the President.” The prosecution says Ofori and another suspect, Alberta Okrah (alias Ghana Jollof), who is currently on the run, hosted the livestream that carried the threats.
The case has been adjourned, with Abiwu and Ofori scheduled to reappear on August 25, 2025.
