A 63-year-old trader has been handed a five-year custodial sentence by the Kwadaso Circuit Court, located in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region, for making away with a tricycle and loaves of bread in Kumasi.
The convict, Adamu Alhassan, admitted guilt to the charge of stealing and was convicted on the strength of his own plea.
Detailing the incident before the court presided over by Mr. Jephthah Appau, Police Chief Inspector David Opoku Kwabi said the complainant, Oduro Zakaria, a bread baker based in Ashtown, Kumasi, while Adamu lived at Ahwiaa in the Afigya Kwabre East Municipality.
According to the prosecution, in February 2024, the complainant had packed 114 loaves of bread worth GH¢1,680.00 onto an unregistered tricycle valued at GH¢35,000.00, intending to deliver them to his clients at the Adehyeman lorry station in Kumasi.
However, the tricycle broke down, and Adamu, who introduced himself as the station master, volunteered to assist in moving the vehicle to a safer spot.
Together, they pushed the faulty tricycle to the Kejetia MTN roundabout. The complainant then left the vehicle in Adamu’s care while he went in search of a mechanic.
Upon returning about an hour later with the technician, he discovered that both the tricycle and Adamu had vanished. When he rushed back to the lorry station, he found out that Adamu neither worked there nor held the position of station master.
Prosecution explained that on August 28 this year, a witness recognized Adamu at the station and alerted the complainant, leading to his arrest.
He was subsequently handed over to the Ashanti Regional Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) of the Ghana Police Service.
In his caution statement to the police, Adamu confessed to the theft of both the bread and the tricycle. He disclosed that he had sold the vehicle to a scrap dealer at Bremang for GH¢700.00 and distributed the bread among bystanders.
Following further investigations, he was formally charged and arraigned before the court
