Police in Ghana’s Ahafo Region have arrested two men believed to be part of an organised robbery syndicate linked to a string of coordinated attacks on businesses in Nkasiem on 2 December.
According to a police statement, the group allegedly struck a gold-buying firm and a cocoa-buying company, and attempted unsuccessfully to break into the vault of the Asutifi Rural Bank. All three premises are located within the same area.
The suspects, described as heavily armed, are said to have seized two police rifles during the operation. The robbers, who reportedly wielded pump-action guns, also shot a civilian in the thigh.
The injured man was taken to St Elizabeth Hospital in Hwidiem/AHR, where he received treatment and was later discharged.
Police say the arrests followed a “targeted intelligence-led operation” mounted by the Ahafo Regional Command, which led to the capture of two members of the group. A manhunt is under way for the remaining suspects, who are currently on the run.
In response to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special anti-robbery team from the National Police Headquarters in Accra to support regional officers. The specialist unit will work alongside local police to track down the rest of the alleged syndicate.
The Police Command has assured the public that it is committed to dismantling the network. “All members of the criminal syndicate will be identified and arrested to face the full rigours of the law,” the statement said, urging residents to remain calm and to assist with ongoing investigations.
