Two men have been arrested at the Osu Cemetery in Accra for allegedly digging a grave without permission.

The suspects, Eric Annan and Joseph Donkor, were picked up early Friday, 6 February, during a joint operation by the cemetery sexton and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly’s security task force.

They have been handed over to the Osu Police for investigations and possible prosecution.

The arrests come a day after the municipal chief executive held a press briefing about reported illegal exhumations and the unauthorized sale of burial plots at the cemetery. After that, the assembly sent in a task force to take control of the area and stop further wrongdoing.

Kinkawe Assemblyman George Abeiku Annan, who worked with the task force, said the action is part of efforts to protect public cemeteries and restore order.

The assembly says it will not tolerate illegal activity at burial grounds and will act to protect the dignity of the dead.
