The accused, Vincent Gbetorglo and Peter Akakpo, also known as “Dompe,” pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and robbery. They are expected to reappear in court on 3 November 2025.

Two former convicts have been remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court over an alleged armed robbery involving a taxi cab and cash exceeding GH¢13,000.

The accused, Vincent Gbetorglo and Peter Akakpo, also known as “Dompe,” pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and robbery. They are expected to reappear in court on 3 November 2025.

A third suspect, identified only as Ayensu, is currently on the run.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Issah Achiburi, the incident occurred on 1 January 2025 around 9:00 pm. The complainant, taxi driver Martin Obeng, was reportedly hired at Madina Zongo Junction to transport the accused and their accomplice to Haatso.

Upon reaching the vicinity of the ICGC Chapel at Haatso, Akakpo allegedly asked to alight. As the driver stopped, Gbetorglo, seated behind him, is said to have restrained him while the others covered his face, tied him up and forced him into the back seat.

Ayensu then took over the vehicle and drove to West Land, where the driver was abandoned.

The suspects allegedly fled with Obeng’s Toyota Corolla taxi, a Samsung Galaxy A05 phone, personal documents, GH¢700 cash, and an MTN mobile money SIM reportedly loaded with GH¢13,000.

Police arrested Gbetorglo on 30 July 2025 at the Accra Mall, recovering the complainant’s phone and SIM cards in the process. One SIM was registered in Akakpo’s name but found in Gbetorglo’s possession.

A search of Gbetorglo’s residence yielded another smartphone, two feature phones and additional SIM cards.

On 13 October 2025, Akakpo was arrested at Kasoa Domeabra after being traced to Gbetorglo’s residence. A search recovered a Vivo smartphone, a keypad phone and multiple SIM cards.

The prosecution told the court that police later located a woman known as Mary, believed to be an acquaintance of Akakpo, at East Legon near American House. A search of her premises led to the discovery of a bag containing a hammer, two jack knives, shoelaces, a black mask, clothing items and a bunch of car keys.

Mary reportedly told investigators the bag belonged to Akakpo and that she was unaware of its contents.

Police say further investigations show that between January and March 2025, the suspects allegedly carried out multiple robberies targeting taxi drivers using similar tactics.

Records also indicate that both Gbetorglo and Akakpo were convicted alongside three others in 2011 by the Cocoa Affairs Court One for a similar offence.

The search for their accomplice, Ayensu, is ongoing.
