The annual Homowo Kpokpoi Sprinkling Ceremony in the Teshie Traditional Area was marred by violence on Tuesday, August 26, leaving two people dead and several others injured.
The victims, identified as 30-year-old Eddy Blessing and 27-year-old Patrick Maamah Martey Fio, died from gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead on arrival at Lekma Hospital. Several others are still receiving treatment, with one person in critical condition.
How the Violence Erupted
According to the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) of the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly, the chaos broke out in the early hours of the ceremony when rival groups clashed. Stones were thrown, and sporadic gunfire forced police to step in.
Although security personnel briefly restored calm, tensions resurfaced later in the morning. This second wave of clashes reportedly involved factions loyal to different traditional leaders.
Despite the disturbances, Paramount Chief Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akonfra III managed to perform key traditional rites before violence erupted again.
The violent confrontations caused panic across the community, with relatives rushing injured persons to emergency wards. Health authorities and the police worked to stabilise the situation, and order has since been restored.
MUSEC has launched investigations to track down the perpetrators and assured that those behind the clashes will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The council extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. It further appealed to residents and traditional factions to exercise restraint and support peace efforts to prevent future disruptions.
