Two young motorbike mechanics have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 28-year-old woman during a robbery at Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region, police say.
Three other men are also in custody, accused of taking part in a string of street robberies across parts of Kumasi and its outskirts.
Briefing journalists on Monday, Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto said the arrests followed coordinated operations carried out in two separate swoops.
According to police, Ms Ngozi was attacked on 6 December 2025 at about 17:00 GMT at Asokore Mampong.
A joint team from the Regional Headquarters and the Anti-Robbery Unit later traced the suspects to a hideout at Aboabo, arresting them on 12 December at about 21:00.
The two have been named as:
Farouk Iddris, 20, a motorbike mechanic and rider
Salim Mohammed, 19, a motorbike mechanic and rickshaw rider
Preliminary investigations suggest the pair robbed the victim, during which one of them allegedly stabbed her with a knife, leading to her death.
A search of Iddris’s room uncovered a machete, knives and other offensive weapons.
“During interrogation, both suspects admitted to committing the robbery. Salim Mohammed, who was the pillion rider on the day of the incident, identified a zigzag-edged knife as the weapon he used to stab the deceased,” DCOP Akoto said.
The pair remain in police custody and are expected to be put before court. The knife and an iPhone 11 Pro believed to belong to the deceased have been retained as exhibits.
In a related intelligence-led operation, officers arrested three further suspects alleged to be behind a spate of street robberies in Asokore Mampong, KNUST, Kanyase, Bosore, Duase, Antoa, Mayanka, Ayeduase and nearby communities.
They were identified as:
Abdul Fatawu, alias UN, 22
Philip Nyarko, alias Kawawa, 24
Samak Hadi, alias Toronto, 21
Police say items seized from their hideouts included 59 iPhones, six Android phones, four tablets and five laptops.
DCOP Akoto told reporters all three had confessed in their caution statements and were assisting with ongoing enquiries.
He urged anyone who may have been a victim of robbery in the affected areas to contact the Ashanti Regional Police Command to help with identification of the recovered gadgets and support the investigations.
All five suspects will be arraigned in due course, he added, assuring residents that police will sustain operations to maintain law and order across the region.
