Tensions escalated when reinforcements from the Eastern Regional Police Counter Terrorism Unit joined officers from the Akyem Tafo Division, only to be met with stone-throwing from agitated locals.
During the clashes, the windshields of a Toyota Tundra with registration GP 4004 and the official Toyota Hilux assigned to the Eastern Regional Police Operations Commander were shattered.
The two injured officers, who suffered eye-related injuries during the clashes, were quickly given medical treatment before being released.
The disturbances followed allegations by the youth that a policeman, identified only as Kumador, physically assaulted the suspect after arresting him during a swoop in which substances believed to be Indian hemp were found.
Outraged, the community stormed the police station en masse, demanding accountability for Bright’s death. Reports indicate that officers on duty abandoned the station amid the violence.
