A Kumasi Circuit Court has handed down 15-year prison sentences with hard labor to two men convicted of armed robbery and related crimes.
Abass Kasim, 26, and Daniel Morro, known as “China,” 25, faced charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, unlawful entry, abetment, and illegal possession of firearms, all of which they initially denied.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Atsu Ahianyo, spokesperson for the Ashanti Regional Police, the sentences will run concurrently. However, three other suspects involved in the case remain at large.
The incident occurred in the early hours of July 31, 2021, in Atonsu Kuwait, Kumasi, where the gang attacked a resident using a pistol and cutlasses. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and multiple cutlass injuries before being robbed of valuables.
Stolen property included an iPhone 1 valued at GHS 5,500, a Samsung phone worth GHS 500, two Apple wristwatches totaling GHS 3,000, ladies’ handbags, jewellery, 600 US dollars, and an undisclosed amount of cedis.
Following investigation, Kasim was arrested on August 12, 2021. He confessed and helped police apprehend Morro, recovering the firearm used in the crime.
Both men pleaded not guilty when first arraigned on August 19, 2021, but after lengthy court proceedings, they were found guilty on July 9, 2025, and sentenced accordingly.
They have now been transferred to the Central Prisons in Kumasi to serve their terms.
