Two men accused of robbing a mobile phone shop in Bolgatanga have been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court.
Jacob Akugri, 24, a painter, and Moses Akungoe, 28, a driver, both pleaded not guilty to charges linked to the alleged robbery.
They are accused of conspiring with others to attack a mobile phone shop at gunpoint and make away with phones and cash.
The court ordered them to remain in police custody until May 28, 2026.
Detective Chief Inspector Frederick Asare told the court that the arrests followed a police operation targeting highway robberies on the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale road.
He said the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department assigned a team from the CID Headquarters Operations Unit to conduct surveillance and gather intelligence on suspects believed to be terrorising commuters along that stretch.
According to the prosecution, the month-long surveillance led investigators to Akugri, also known as “Weezy”, and Akungoe, popularly called “Mosbee”.
The two, who are residents of Walewale in the North East Region, are alleged to be members of a criminal gang linked to several armed robbery attacks in the North East and Upper East regions.
The court heard that on May 9, 2026, police tracked the suspects from Walewale to Kumasi.
They were later arrested from separate hideouts.
Detective Chief Inspector Asare said the accused persons admitted in their caution statements that they had taken part in several highway robberies in that part of the country.
He said preliminary investigations had also revealed the identities of other alleged accomplices, including persons believed to be leaders of the gang.
The prosecution further alleged that Akugri and Akungoe, together with their accomplices, were involved in an armed robbery at a mobile phone shop on Dakio Road in Bolgatanga.
During that attack, the suspects allegedly held shop attendants at gunpoint and stole assorted mobile phones and money.
Police say efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects, recover weapons in their possession, trace their source of supply and identify buyers of the stolen items.
