The suspects were identified as 37-year-old Stephen Gletsu, who was riding the motorbike, and 20-year-old Mohammed Sheriff, who was seated behind him.

Police in Accra say they have arrested two men suspected of a string of street robberies after an intelligence-led patrol operation in Dzorwulu.

In a statement, the Kotobabi District Police Command said the arrests were made on Wednesday, 14 January 2026, when officers on a routine motorbike patrol spotted two people riding an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike and considered their behaviour suspicious.

The suspects were identified as 37-year-old Stephen Gletsu, who was riding the motorbike, and 20-year-old Mohammed Sheriff, who was seated behind him.

Police said both were dressed in black and wearing black helmets, with the pillion rider seen holding a cutlass. Officers said the men sped off after noticing the patrol team, leading to a chase.

During the pursuit, police fired warning shots, and the suspects lost control of the motorbike and fell near Roman Ridge, close to the Nigerian High Commission, according to the statement. The pair then tried to escape on foot but were traced and arrested.

A search, police said, led to the retrieval of multiple mobile phones, cash and a necklace. The items listed were an Infinix phone, an iPhone 12 Pro, a Samsung A21, an iPhone 15 Pro, an iPhone 13, an Infinix feature phone, an itel feature phone, a Nokia feature phone, an Infinix X6528, a necklace, GH¢2,690 and two US dollars.

Police said the suspects sustained injuries during the arrest and were treated at the Police Hospital before being discharged.

During interrogation, officers said, the two admitted involvement in robbery and claimed responsibility for attacks on several victims across the Accra metropolis. Police said statements have been taken from multiple complainants who have identified both the suspects and some of the phones as stolen property.

The Accra Regional Police Command said it would continue operations to curb street robbery and other criminal activity in the capital.

The statement was signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region.
