The deceased has been identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Level 200 student of the university.
The University of Cape Coast has opened an internal inquiry after one of its students was found dead at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.
The deceased has been identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Level 200 student of the university.
Her body was discovered on Friday, prompting police to notify the university after preliminary checks confirmed she was a student.
UCC, in a statement issued through its Directorate of Public Affairs, said it is working with the UCC District Police Command as investigations continue.
The Office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs is coordinating the university’s response.
According to the university, the Dean’s office is assisting the police with identification processes and the gathering of information that may help establish what happened.
Family members of the deceased visited the police station on Saturday, June 13, to formally identify the body.
The university said it is also helping with communication between the police and the bereaved family.
Preliminary information available to investigators indicates that Ms Avinu lived in a private hostel at Amamoma.
She was reportedly last seen on the evening of Wednesday, June 10.
Her roommate told investigators that Ms Avinu received a phone call at about 7:00pm, dressed casually and left the room.
She did not return.
UCC said counselling and psychological support have been made available to the deceased’s roommate, classmates, course mates and other students affected by the incident.
The police have taken charge of the criminal investigation.
They are expected to obtain a coroner’s form on Monday, June 15, before a post-mortem examination is conducted to determine the cause of death.
The university and the police have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims about the incident.
They warned that speculation could interfere with investigations and worsen the grief of the family and the university community.
Acting Director of Public Affairs, Dr Kwabena Antwi-Konadu, said university management had been informed and support measures were being extended to the family, the affected roommate and students during the difficult period.
