The University Teachers Association of Ghana, Winneba Chapter (UTAG-UEW), has expressed profound sorrow and outrage over the disturbing death of Professor Mawuadem Koku Amedeker, whose lifeless body was shockingly discovered buried in his home at Gyahadze, a community within Winneba.

Professor Amedeker had been missing for several weeks until May 22, when his remains were exhumed under distressing circumstances. \

In a statement released on Sunday, May 25, UTAG-UEW described the incident as “heart-wrenching” and said it has sent waves of grief and disbelief through the university and the wider academic community.

The association remembered the late professor as a distinguished scholar and a pillar within the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), lamenting the vacuum his sudden and violent death has created.

“We mourn alongside his family, students, colleagues, and the entire UEW fraternity. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all affected by this tragic loss,” the statement read.

UTAG-UEW acknowledged the solidarity received from its national executives and thanked the Ghana Police Service for swiftly launching an investigation that led to the arrest of an initial suspect.

The union has called for an unrelenting pursuit of justice, urging law enforcement authorities to identify and prosecute all persons linked to what it condemned as a “barbaric act.”

“We call on the police to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the full truth and ensuring that everyone responsible is held accountable,” the association emphasized.

Beyond seeking justice for their fallen colleague, UTAG-UEW used the opportunity to spotlight a growing concern over security lapses on university campuses. The group called on government officials, educational authorities, and security agencies to work together to institute stronger safety protocols for both faculty and students.

The association pledged to honor Professor Amedeker’s memory by continuing to advocate for the ideals he stood for — integrity, justice, and academic service to Ghana.
