Fear has gripped the Wa Municipality in the Upper West Region after the killing of a night guard in the Dobile Electoral Area.
The victim, Yahya Issa, better known to locals as Soja, was discovered dead at dawn on Saturday, September 20.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Issah Nura Danwana, reacting to the incident, described it as deeply disturbing. He reminded the public that concerns over security had long been raised in various communities.
“Street lights remain a major issue. We have worked on 378 lights and repaired 166, but there is still a deficit of about 400. We are following up with the Ministry of Energy to ensure more lights are fixed. Many dark spots have been lit in recent weeks, but more needs to be done,” he explained.
The MCE, however, stressed that lighting problems alone could not explain what happened, since the spot where the crime occurred is barely 400 meters from a police station and very close to the new market.
Assembly Member for Dobile, Zakaria Ibrahim, who was at the scene, said Issa worked as a night watchman at the Wa Regional Market. He recalled the disturbing scene he encountered.
“Before we arrived, a knife was found lying on his chest. His face was badly smashed, with blood flowing from the forehead. From what we gathered, the attackers may have used a block to hit his head,” he narrated.
Ibrahim described the case as shocking and recalled other violent incidents in Wa over the years. Yet, unlike earlier attacks on watchmen, he observed that this time the victim’s body parts had not been removed.
Police have since taken the body to the Upper West Regional Hospital mortuary for an autopsy. Investigations into the killing have already begun.
The latest crime has renewed painful memories of 2022, when a string of murders targeting security guards unsettled the entire municipality and forced heightened police operations.
Fears are now mounting that the disturbing pattern could be resurfacing. Community members are demanding urgent and decisive measures to protect lives and prevent further bloodshed.
