Police in the Upper West Region have rescued a week-old baby stolen from its mother at the Wa market, popularly known as Kejetia.

The suspect, 38-year-old Abena Martha Maanibeh, allegedly disguised herself as a hospital caretaker at the Wa Regional Hospital before tricking the baby’s mother, Ms. Kwofie Mwinibelle, into following her to purchase diapers on August 10. She then vanished with the infant and a handbag containing money, a phone, and other valuables.

A statement signed by DCOP Darko Offei Lomotey, the Regional Commander, confirmed that officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), led by ASP Stella Atukwia, tracked the suspect to the Nuobollie community in the Savannah Region, where she was arrested on August 15.

The infant was found safe and has since been reunited with the mother. Some stolen property was also recovered.

Maanibeh appeared before the Wa District Magistrate Court on August 18 and was remanded into custody. She is due back in court on September 2, 2025.

Police urged the public to stay vigilant and assured residents of their continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the region.
