Police in the Ajumako District of the Central Region have intensified efforts to locate a woman in her 50s who was captured on surveillance video allegedly abducting an 11-month-old baby from a busy market.
The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the local community, occurred at the Ajumako market, where a CCTV camera recorded the woman walking away with the child after engaging the baby’s caregiver in a brief conversation.
Esi Sekyiwaa, the mother of the baby, recounted that she had left her child in the care of her sister-in-law while she sold cassava nearby. The suspect reportedly approached the caregiver, offered assistance, and used the distraction to escape with the child.
The family reviewed the security footage and confirmed the woman’s actions. Based on her appearance and accent, they believe she may be from Winneba, Apam, or Mankessim—towns within the region—and are pleading with the public for help.
Police say the suspect is still at large and are urging anyone with information that could lead to her arrest or the safe return of the child to come forward.
The case remains under active investigation.
